Infant + Toddler Nursery

When I was 27 weeks pregnant with my second daughter, I woke up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom (as most pregnant women do), and I stepped in some water on the way. My first thought was that one of the cats had vomited - except that it was endless so I turned on a light to find that our apartment was flooded. A pipe had burst in the apartment across the hall and water came pouring in through our shared wall and the front door. Our floors were destroyed, and it was quickly clear that we would need to vacate the apartment. So at 33 weeks pregnant, we moved to a bigger and better place! In hindsight, this flood was such a blessing because we absolutely love our new building (been there for 4.5 years now!) and have made some seriously amazing friendships while living here.

Moving from a two bedroom to a three bedroom apartment gave us the flexibility to have a guest room! My mom was coming to stay with us for a few weeks before and after Cecilia was born. Since I had been on bedrest at 32 weeks during my pregnancy with Layla, we felt that this was inevitable for this pregnancy as well. And yes, I did end up on bedrest at 34 weeks once I started to contract. Moving the full sized bed out of the nursery really opened it up!

Since we live in NYC, we thought it would be practical to have the girls share a room, and luckily the room was big enough for that. Figuring out how to make a space work for two kids can be overwhelming, but in the end it worked out well for us! Layla’s crib that she literally did not spend a single night in (one day I will write a post about our bed sharing experience) quickly became Cecilia’s crib. And Layla was super excited for her new toddler bed.

Since Layla’s crib was originally furnished with the light pink Harper bedding from Pottery Barn Kids (and that moved over to her toddler bed), I went with bright pink for Cecilia. And I was able to find the bright pink bird prints set for above her crib. Also above the crib is the It’s a Girl banner that hung up at my California baby shower. Love integrating these sentimental pieces into the decor!

Our tiny IKEA changing table moved into our bedroom as an extra station, and we upgraded to a double wide dresser with a topper for the nursery. The size of this room allowed me to put up a tree wall decal that I had been eyeing for months. Add in some more fun bird themed decor plus a sister themed wall canvas and ta-da!

Hanging above the dresser are the framed prints from the maternity shoot that Layla and I did while waiting for Cecilia to arrive. Highly recommend the gallery wall kits from Pottery Barn brands. I’ll do a separate post on how simple they make it for you. And all of our shelving got an update with new books and trinkets.

Keeping a crib cozy these days can be tough since blankets, pillows, and traditional crib bumpers are not recommended. I have found the softest chamois crib sheets plus Wonder Bumpers help boost the comfort levels so the crib doesn’t feel so empty. And lastly, I had to include this final photo which is one of my all time favorites from the day!
